On 26 August 2025, Earth Systems returned to Pakistan to conduct an environmental and social monitoring review for the construction of a sophisticated value-added agricultural processing facility near Karachi.

This work was undertaken on behalf of the Project’s lenders and follows on from our earlier environmental and social review in 2024, which led to the development of an Environmental and Social Action Plan (ESAP) to align the Project with the International Finance Corporation’s (IFC) Standards for Environmental and Social Sustainability.

Driving Innovation in Rice Processing

This landmark Project is setting a new benchmark for rice processing in Pakistan. The state-of-the-art facility will transform broken rice — a traditionally low-value by-product — into high-value derivatives such as sorbitol, dextrose, and rice protein. These products are vital inputs for the global food and pharmaceutical industries, positioning Pakistan as a significant player in the value-added agricultural sector.

Sustainability at the Core

The facility has been designed with sustainability in mind. Key features include:

  • Zero water discharge off-site, ensuring efficient and responsible water management.

  • 100% utilisation of raw materials, eliminating waste in the production cycle.

  • Rice husk cogeneration plant, which will supply all of the site’s heat requirements and part of its electricity needs.

By integrating advanced technology and sustainable practices, the Project demonstrates how agricultural processing can deliver both economic growth and environmental responsibility.

Earth Systems’ Role

Our team continues to provide expert oversight and independent monitoring, ensuring that the Project remains compliant with international best practice standards. By doing so, Earth Systems supports not only the success of this facility but also the broader goal of sustainable agricultural development in Pakistan.
