The next Australian Acid and Metalliferous Drainage (AMD) Workshop will take place on 20–21 October 2025 in Brisbane, organised by the Sustainable Minerals Institute at The University of Queensland. Earth Systems is proud to have submitted a series of abstracts and looks forward to presenting its latest AMD management technologies.

A highlight of our participation will be the introduction of new software packages for material characterisation and classification. These tools are designed to simplify the assessment of waste rock and tailings materials, allowing mining companies and regulators to better understand environmental risks without requiring specialist geochemical expertise.

Simplifying Complex Data

Traditionally, companies collect either static geochemical data to identify potential risks, or they use advanced mineralogical techniques such as hyperspectral scans or X-Ray Diffraction. Earth Systems’ tools integrate both approaches, rapidly converting raw data into industry-standard AMD classifications and rock behaviour insights. This means faster, more cost-effective, and more reliable decision-making across the mining lifecycle.

Introducing AMDact and ImpactScan

  • AMDact (AMD Assessment and Classification Tool)A software solution that automatically assesses multi-parameter geochemical datasets. It provides unbiased risk classifications, statistical analyses, and standardised plots, while minimising uncertainties and ambiguities in AMD characterisation.

  • ImpactScanA mineralogical assessment tool that interprets hyperspectral and X-Ray Diffraction data. It identifies AMD risks, asbestiform and radioactive minerals, greenhouse gas generation and adsorption potential, and opportunities for landform construction.

Together, these tools represent a step-change in how the mining industry can interpret complex chemical and mineralogical datasets — offering clear, actionable insights as early as the exploration stage.

Looking Ahead

Earth Systems will be showcasing these technologies at the AMD Workshop in Brisbane and during the Geochemical Short Course on 19 October 2025. We look forward to engaging with mining professionals, regulators, and researchers to share practical examples of how these tools are shaping the future of AMD risk management.
